A day in the life…Baby Room

As a parent, when you send your little one off to nursery it can be hard to envisage what their day might look like, particularly when they are still too young to come home and tell you all about it. At First Steps Nursery we make sure that our babies have a busy and enriching day full of stimulating activities, as well as periods of calm and rest so they can recharge.

A day in the life of our babies will usually start with breakfast time. Depending on the age of the child we have highchairs, bumbos and low level seats at the table. Meal times provide the children with the opportunity to socialise, as they get older begin to learn to feed themselves and of course refuel ready for a fun day of playing.

Throughout the day the children will have access to ‘free play activities’ where they can choose from a variety of activities such as our sensory boxes, musical toys, small world toys, building blocks, ICT toys, ride on toys and much more. During this time our fantastic practitioners will role model how different toys can be used, engage with the children to develop speech and language skills and help our non-mobile babies to move to different areas of interest.

We will also have some adult lead activities to participate in, these are activities that have been set up by the practitioners and can be a variety of; messy play, craft activities or targeted activities to help children meet their next steps in learning and development. Some of our favourites in the baby room are sand and water play, painting, shaving foam play, playdough and gluing and sticking. During all these activities the children are closely supervised and again practitioners are there to model and guide the children through the activity.

Within our day in the baby room we also have group circle times, these are a fantastic opportunity for socialisation and the introduction to new language. We have a song box in the baby room where the children can select an object that links to a nursery rhyme for the group to sing. We also share stories at this time which is great to promote listening and attention skills.

Lunch and tea time are an opportunity for our children to try new foods, with a mixture of spoon fed meals and finger foods to explore. When children start with us the practitioners in the baby room will discuss which stage of weaning the children are at so we can ensure we can blend or mash food appropriately.

Garden time is an important part of our daily routine where the babies can explore the outdoor environment. We have equipment to promote gross motor skills such as our slide, ride along toys and our ball pit. We also use our walkers and jumperooos for our younger babies to ensure they get the opportunity to be outside too.

All of these stimulating activities mean our children are very busy and need time to reset and recharge. Our quiet sleep room is the perfect place for our babies to have a nap during their day. We always check in with parents to understand their child sleep routines and we mirror these as closely as possible at nursery. Whilst children are napping they are checked on at regular intervals by the practitioners.

Every day in our baby room is filled with different activities to explore but always in the same safe, secure and caring environment to make sure our babies thrive and are nurtured. We love watching them grow and develop in our Baby room at First Steps Nursery and hit their big milestones such as crawling, walking and those amazing first words.
