Super Heroes

On Thursday 22 February, we enjoyed our “Superhero” day in Aid of Forest Holme Hospice, a charity very close to our hearts at First Steps Nursery in Oakdale. All of the children and staff put in a fantastic effort with their outfits and it was lovely to welcome all the very excited children in their Superhero costumes. We are very proud to say we have reached and exceeded our £250 target and the total raised currently stands at £282!

Our day was filled with Superhero themed activities, from making masks to Superhero handprint art work and we even had a Superhero themed dance session from Itsy Bitsy. The children loved having their photo taken against our Superhero back drop and showed off some amazing Superhero poses.

All the children across all of our age ranges got involved, with our babies enjoying some Superhero themed sticking activities as well as some painting of their Superhero pictures using stampers. Over in the toddler room we all made our own mask to take home and had fun decorating these using crete paper and glue. Our pre-schoolers all took home their very own Superhero certificate as well as a spiderman hand print picture.

Superhero play has many learning benefits and we often find in our preschool it is a real area of interest for our children. Children are constantly learning but it’s being able to apply these skills in play which helps them to practice over and over. Superhero play engages children’s drama skills and expands their vocabulary and language development. But just as importantly, pretending to be a Superhero is way for children to develop healthy emotions. After all, Superheroes face really big emotions and big challenges every single day, just like children do. This builds children’s understanding of what emotion is, leading to them learning to regulate their feelings. Pretend play gives children space to experience a whole range of emotions, real or otherwise. Our childcare practitioners at First Steps Nursery can create learning moments to talk through the different emotions we experience, both positive and negative. Identifying and recognising their own emotions allows children to develop healthy responses as they grow. ‘Each of us is a “Superhero” in our own unique way, so we should practice our superpowers each and every day!’

We have posted lots of images on our Facebook and Instagram pages of our fantastic day so please follow us to see more. We would like to take the opportunity to thank each and everyone of you who donated.

If you would like your own little Superhero to come to our Nursery or Pre-school in Oakdale, Poole, why not book a tour today?
