World Book Day

On Thursday 7th March we celebrated World Book Day at First Steps Nursery. The children came in some incredible outfits and as always, our staff joined in with the dressing up too. Throughout the day the children enjoyed a variety of book themed activities.

In our baby room the children had some crafty fun creating their ‘very hungry caterpillar’ pictures. The children used their handprints to create their art work and they were very proud to take their pictures home at the end of the day. We also enjoyed story time with the books our friends brought in, the children particularly enjoyed the stories from the ‘that’s not my’ series of books.

Over in the toddler room one of our friends brought in the story ‘Wonky Donkey’ and this was a real hit. The children found the story very funny and all did very well making their donkey sounds. We then played with our farm and animals to extend our learning and look at different animals and the sounds they make.

In Preschool we enjoyed a ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’ tuff tray activity. The children had the various items from the story and had to match baby bear, mummy bear and daddy bear to the correct size item. This encouraged some excellent mathematical language. We also had oats to try and make the perfect porridge for the bears. The children also created their own book marks to take home and during circle time we spoke about our favourite stories.

World book day is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the world of books with the children. Reading books and stories with babies and children is important for language and literacy development. Shared book reading is a perfect opportunity to develop knowledge about the world, empathy and shared understandings. Creating warm and shared meaningful experiences with books from the earliest age matters. Even the youngest babies can engage joyfully and purposefully in shared reading, at home and in early care and education settings. Here at First Steps Nursery in Oakdale, Poole, story time is something that happens daily and all of our rooms have a dedicated book corner area for the children to explore.
