Limiting Screen Time in Pre-schoolers

This month we thought we’d do a blog post on something that affects us all and can be difficult to navigate as a parent of young children. At First Steps we are great believers in finding balance in childhood experiences.

Raising pre-schoolers in the digital age is a tightrope walk between allowing them to benefit from technology and ensuring they don’t become screen zombies! So how do you manage the screen-time monster? Here are a few ideas that may help you:

Engaging Alternatives

At First Steps we keep their little hands and minds busy with books, puzzles and lots of messy play activities. These can all be extended to the home environment although we are happy to take on the brunt of the messy activities within the Nursery, so you don’t have to! This time of year is fantastic for outdoor adventures, with lots of Autumn leaves and puddles to jump in. The more engaging the alternative, the less they'll miss screens.

Screen-Free Zones

Create sacred spaces both at home and at places like First Steps, where screens are a no-go. For example; dining tables and bedrooms. This helps to reinforce healthy habits.

Scheduled Screen Time

Set specific times for screens and stick to a routine. This way, children know when it’s time to turn off and do something else. Use your Alexa to set a fun message to end their screen time that will make them smile and help them move on to something else.

Lead by Example

Let’s be real: children are expert mimics. Show them how to balance screen time by reducing your own. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Navigating Tricky Times: Helpful Tips for Parents from First Steps:

Parenting isn’t always a walk in the park, and sometimes it feels more like a rollercoaster. At First Steps Nursery, we understand the challenges. Here are some tips to keep your sanity and help your child thrive:

Stay Calm

Remember, emotions are contagious. Staying calm helps your child stay calm too. Deep breaths!

Consistent Routines

Children thrive on predictability. Keeping meal, play, and sleep times consistent provides a sense of security, just like the structured environment we maintain at First Steps Nursery.

Open Communication

Encourage your child to share their feelings. Listen, validate, and reassure them that it’s okay to feel upset sometimes. We practice open communication at First Steps Nursery to help children express themselves freely.

Positive Reinforcement

Focus on what they’re doing right rather than just pointing out what they’re doing wrong. Celebrate the wins! At First Steps Nursery, we emphasise positive reinforcement to foster a supportive and encouraging environment.

Time-Outs for Parents

Remember, it’s okay to step away for a moment to collect yourself. A quick breather can work wonders. Schedule in some “me” time for yourself where you can.

Parenting is a journey full of twists and turns, but with these tips and a bit of patience, you can navigate the digital age and tricky times like a pro. Here at First Steps Nursery, we’re committed to keeping it fun and always trusting your instincts!
